Foreclosures here up 38 percent

Posted on October 29, 2009

SEATTLE — A total of 6,495 properties entered into some stage of foreclosure in the Seattle metropolitan area in the third quarter of this year, a 38 percent increase from a year ago, according to RealtyTrac, an online foreclosure database.

That 6,495 figure is a decrease of 11 percent from the second quarter of 2009.

Seattle's foreclosure rate is relatively low compared to other major U.S. metropolitan areas, according to RealtyTrac spokesman Daren Blomquist.

Seattle now ranks 95 out of 203 metro areas the firm tracks. A year ago it ranked 106th. The lower the number, the higher the foreclosure rate.

Seattle's foreclosure rate is getting worse relative to other major metro areas, said Blomquist. “(But) with that said, it's still 95 so it's not in the top 10 or even the top 50.”

Nationally 937,840 properties entered into some stage of foreclosure in the third quarter of this year, a 23 percent increase from a year ago, Blomquist said.
